Location
In 1998 the administrative and research divisions of the Department of Psychiatry moved into the McKnight Brain Institute (MBI) of the University of Florida, which encompasses over 200,000 gross square feet and provides a wealth of laboratory, office and teaching space for MBI faculty, staff and students. Clinical services are located in Shands Medical Plaza at the University of Florida, Shands at Vista, and the Gainesville Veterans Administration Medical Center.
The University of Florida is located in Gainesville, the county-seat of Alachua County. Not far from the northern border of Florida and a little more than an hour's drive from either coast, the city has a pleasant climate. Gainesville has a weather pattern unique to any other location. Afternoons in the fall and spring can be paradisiacal with clear skies, a light breeze, low humidity, and high temperatures averaging around 72.07 degrees Fahrenheit. The city averages 48.36 inches of precipitation per year. Summer is the wettest season, with 19.51 inches of precipitation, while fall is the driest season, with only 9.04 inches of precipitation. The coast is not so near that the area is in much danger from tropical storms.
