3. Diagnostic and Treatment Case Conference
a) Required both years
b) Faculty: Gary Geffken, Ph.D. and Regina Bussing, MD
c) Residents present the psychiatric history, clinical presentation, and testing results, if applicable, of a patient, with discussion and case formulation by residents and faculty. Residents are assigned to present cases in rotation.
d) First and second year child fellows and Psychology interns and postdoctoral students.
e) 1 hour weekly for 2 years.
f) Goal and objectives: The resident will gain knowledge in the assessment and treatment of child and adolescent psychiatric disorders.
Knowledge:
- Biologic correlates of psychiatric disorders
- Prevalence rates and variation by study population
- Uses of psychological testing during psychiatric assessment
- Limitations of DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for children
- Strength of evidence base for psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions
- Psychiatric co-morbidity
- Prognostic factors
- Ethnic disparities in child mental health care
Skills:
- Effective case presentation
- Integration of case material into diagnostic formulation
Attitudes:
- Commitment to increasing his/her knowledge evidenced by regular attendance, consistent preparation, and active participation in the discussions
- Respect for the roles of professionals from multiple disciplines in child and adolescent psychiatry
