7. Forensic Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Seminar

a) Required both years

b) Faculty: Marty Lazoritz, M.D.

c) Civil and criminal laws are reviewed as they apply to children and adolescents. Application of theory to the preparation of material for courts is emphasized. Periodically judges, lawyers, and juvenile justice experts provide presentations.

d) Other disciplines may attend with permission.

e) Bimonthly 2-hour sessions for 2 years.

f) Goal and objectives: To have a fund of knowledge in the assessment and treatment of child psychiatric disorders in forensics settings.

  1. Consent and confidentiality in varying settings
  2. Child dependency
  3. Juvenile justice
  4. Child abuse reporting
  5. Legal and ethical issues relating to practice of child and adolescent psychiatry

  1. Appreciation for the legal complexities inherent to the treatment of psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents
  2. Awareness and sensitivity of cultural difference s among children and their families
  3. Respect for the contributions of professionals from multiple disciplines
