SUBJECT: UF COM Sexual Harassment Policy
Definition: Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when:
- submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual’s employment or academic performance;
- submission to or rejection or such conduct by and individual is used as the basis for employment or academic decisions affecting such individual, or;
- such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s work or academic performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive working or educational environment.
What To Do About Sexual Harassment:
- Learn the University of Florida and College of Medicine (COM) policies and procedures.
- If possible, speak up when an incident occurs and tell the offender to STOP the offensive behavior in a clear and firm manner.
- Consider communicating with the offender by writing a letter detailing you concerns and asking the person to STOP.
- Keep a written record and any evidence that might corroborate your story.
- Seek information about your options from the COM designated counselor, if desired. This will not initiate a formal investigation, and will give you an opportunity to discuss your concerns confidentially; provide counseling about the options for resolving the current situation and preventing future incidents; assist in conflict resolution; and advise, if deemed appropriate, how to file a formal complaint to the Chair of the Sexual Harassment Committee to proceed with a full investigation.
Who to Contact:
These designated COM counselors do NOT participate in any subsequent investigation, and they have no obligation to report any incident that is brought to their attention.

The Investigation Process:
In the COM, the Chair of the Sexual Harassment Committee, as the Dean’s designee, appoints two trained faculty members to investigate the alleged situation and prepare a report of their findings. The Dean receives the report and determines whether harassment has occurred and recommends the action to be taken, and notifies the complainant and the accused of the results of the investigation and of any action proposed.
