For U.S. graduates, the minimum eligibility requirements to enter the program include graduation from a medical school accredited by the American Association of Medical Colleges. A graduate of a foreign medical school must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, demonstrate proficiency in the English language and score 80 or above on Step 1 and 2 of the USMLE. If you are a foreign citizen, you must be eligible for a J-1 Visa. (You cannot begin the program without acquiring a green card or J-1 Visa. Evidence of an aptitude for and interest in psychiatry is also required by having 1 year of experience in Psychiatry (e.g. extensive volunteer work, internships, prior residency, research, etc.). Interviews. Applications are reviewed in the ERAS system and 25-30 interviews are granted. For each interview date, five applicants are invited. A dinner is held the night before the interview day at the residency training director's home. The interview day begins at Shands at Vista with the applicants having breakfast with the Associate Chairman of Clinical Affairs, Dr. Martin Lazoritz. The applicants will proceed to meet with a number of the faculty members and residents from all post-graduate classes. Tours of all facilities including the McKnight Brain Institute, Shands Hospital, Shands at Vista, and the Veterans Administration hospital will be provided. Also, tours of the University and the city of Gainesville will occur. It is our mission to give each applicant a truly representative picture of life as a resident in the University of Florida Department of Psychiatry in the beautiful city of Gainesville. Spousal Employment Opportunities. Recognizing that incoming residents are often faced with the prospect of a spouse or significant other simultaneously seeking a professional position, the department works closely with University Human Resources Office to assist these residents, if possible. Appointment
to Program. Selection to the program usually becomes effective
on the following July 1st, although this date may occasionally vary. The
University of Florida Residency Program is a participant in the National
Resident Matching Program (NRMP). If an applicant matches with our program,
they will be offered a position in the program. |
