the Residency Training Resident Life
|
Resident Honors. Our residents compete on a national level for prestigious awards such as the Mead-Johnson, Laughlin, and Burroughs-Wellcome fellowships. Past residents have earned achievement and leadership awards including the ACNP/NIMH fellowship, the Sol Ginsburg GAP fellowship, and the APA Outstanding Women in Psychiatry award. In addition, the Department of Psychiatry presents a number of annual awards to the residents. These include the John Adams Academic Achievement Awards given to one resident from each resident class that is judged to be the most likely to succeed as a scholar in Psychiatry, the Richard Christensen Community Service Award, the John Kuldau Research Award, the Ross McElroy Psychotherapy Award, and the Josepha Cheong Medical Student Clinical Teaching Award. Resident Evaluation. To enhance the educational process, periodic evaluation of the resident's progress is undertaken. This includes written exams (Psychiatry Resident in Training Exam, PRITE), self-assessment, as well as assessment by faculty, nursing, and peers. As of July 1, 2003, the ACGME has instituted six core competenc ies in practice-based medicine. In order to complete the program, residents must demonstrate proficiency in these core areas. Such assessment is essential if training is to be effectively individualized to fit the needs and career interests of each resid ent in the program. Since useful evaluation must be reciprocal, residents are encouraged and have ample opportunity to critique curriculums and clinical assignments. On-Call. Residents have call responsibilities throughout their training. The first postgraduate year resident serves as the on-call house officer for the Psychiatric Inpatient Services at Shands Hospital and the VA. Call occurs approximately every 6th night and is taken from home. The second postgraduate year resident serves as the psychiatric physician on-call at the emergency rooms of Shands Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Emergency consults are also provided. During the second year of residency, call is taken once per week; a call room is provided, but many residents choose to await calls from home. Third and fourth year residents provide back-up support for on-call residents as needed. All residents
are on call with an attending from the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry.
This Graduate Education Committee. Residents also serve on the Graduate Education Committee and its various subcommittees. University of Florida residents play an active and essential role in shaping our residency training. Each class elects two of its members to help guide the program's development and growth. Psychiatry Residents Association. The residents have their own elected governmental body, which directs the social and recreational activities of the residency class. A yearly book allowance is provided to each resident. Frequent luncheons are provided as well to encourage the residents to meet informally as the Psychiatric Residents Association. An ongoing project of our residents is the Helping Hands Clinic, a mental health program that meets the needs of the underserved and homeless population of Gainesville. Paid Extramural Educational Program (“Moonlighting”). The Department of Psychiatry adheres to the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology's policy on housestaff participating in non-programmatic activities. Ample opportunities for approved outside employment are available in programs affiliated with the Department. These experiences are selected to expand and enhance the resident's overall set of supervised activities. The department believes that moonlighting can be a valuable educational experience. This practice is handled on an individual basis through the Graduate Education Committee and the Director of Residency Training. Fringe
Benefits. The Department of Psychiatry provides health coverage
for residents and their families on the same State Mutual insurance plan
as the faculty. Each resident is provided with a $10,000 life insurance
policy and disability insurance. Additional insurance policies are available
through the Shands Hospital personnel office, and information may be requested
during payroll sign-up and orientation. Residents are entitled to fifteen
days leave with pay for the purpose of annual and ten days sick leave
per year during the training period. |
