Wayne K. Goodman, M.D. - Chair of Psychiatry
Dr. Goodman was appointed Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida in July 1998. He was recruited to the University of Florida in 1993 from Yale University. Dr. Goodman was raised in New York City where he attended the Bronx High School of Science. He graduated from Columbia University and Boston University School of Medicine and completed his internship, residency, and research fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. He is the principal developer of the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the gold standard for rating OCD. Dr. Goodman is a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and is author of over 150 articles, chapters, and books. At the University of Florida, he continues to conduct federally funded clinical research on OCD and Tourette's Syndrome as well as mentoring other faculty on their research careers. Dr. Goodman has pioneered in providing surgical and other experimental psychiatric treatments. These new treatments and the evaluation of treatment resistant patients are important parts of our training program. Dr. Goodman meets regularly with residents, participating in didactics, and devotes significant resources and support to housestaff development.

Mark S. Gold MD - Associate Chair, Education & Academic Affairs
Dr. Gold is a Distinguished Professor at the McKnight Brain Institute in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience. He is Vice Chair for Education, an Exemplary Teacher of the University, and the Chief of the Division of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Gold is a teacher, researcher, and inventor who has worked for over 30 years to develop models for understanding the effects of tobacco and other drugs on the brain and behavior and developed new treatments for addicts. He is the mentor of many of the nations current leaders in tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, eating disorders, and addiction education and research. He is a Distinguished alumni and an Honors graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine where he was an AOA and Faculty Research Award winner. Dr. Gold currently serves on the UF College of Medicine, Alumni Board, Admissions Committee, and Curriculum Committee. Dr. Gold actively teaches basic science as well as clinical and motivational interviewing, and the clinical evaluation and treatment of eating disorders. Dr. Gold also serves as a research mentor for junior faculty, MD/PhD, and PhD students. Dr. Gold is actively involved at both the state and federal levels as a consultant and lecturer. Dr. Gold is the author of over 700 scientific publications and 15 textbooks.

Richard C. Holbert, MD - Residency Training Director
Dr. Holbert graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and went on to complete his psychiatric residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Since joining the faculty as an Assistant Professor in April 1999, Dr. Holbert has been Chief of the Department's Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) Team for the Shands Psychiatry/Medical Inpatient Unit at Shands Hospital. This is the primary site for ECT therapy in the State of Florida. He also serves as an Attending in the department's Pain Clinic, Weight Management Clinic, and Consult Liaison Service. He served as Chief of the Consult Liaison Service from July 1999 through June 2002. In December 2001, Dr. Holbert was named Residency Training Director. As a Resident in the Department, Dr. Holbert worked extensively with Dr. Gold on a wide variety of clinical research projects including the neuropsychiatric interface between overeating and addiction. Dr. Holbert distinguished himself as a medical student and Resident teacher. He was awarded the Outstanding Resident of the year, as well as Medical alumni Resident of the year 1997-98. Dr. Holbert was the recipient of a number of awards at the 2003 graduation ceremony.

Robert Averbuch, MD - Associate Residency Training Director
Originally from South Florida, Dr. Averbuch received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Emory University. He attended medical school at the University of Florida, where he went on to complete a residency in Psychiatry. Dr. Averbuch served as chief resident in his fourth year and continued his training in a Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at the University. Since joining the faculty in July of 2000, Dr. Averbuch has focused his clinical work in the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic and the division of Forensic Psychiatry. In the outpatient clinic, Dr. Averbuch has taken on the role of Assistant Clinic Director. In November of 2000, Dr. Averbuch assumed the position of Assistant Residency Training Director, allowing greater emphasis on his strong interests in teaching and residency training. His areas of specialty continue to be forensic psychiatry, psychopharmacology, medical student education, student mental health, and residency training. He is Board Certified in both General Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
