Shands at Vista is the major inpatient psychiatry and substance abuse treatment center associated with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida. It is located on an 18-acre landscaped campus in northwest Gainesville, just 5 miles from the UF Health Science Center. Shands at Vista is an 81-bed psychiatric hospital that provides a variety of programs for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, family conflict, substance abuse, and psychosis. The programs at Vista are all multidisciplinary and are integrated as teaching services with active participation of residents, fellows and medical and other students in addition to senior faculty of the Department of Psychiatry. Florida Recovery Center

The Florida Recovery Center (FRC) at the University of Florida offers evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults with substance use problems. Under the leadership of Dr. Scott Teitelbaum, the program includes medical and psychiatric evaluation and management, detoxification, and relapse prevention. The FRC and the University of Florida College of Medicine's Division of Addiction Medicine provide academic support and ambiance to a program that is based on a goal of abstinence. The most sophisticated medical and neurological testing is available while at the same time we offer the most traditional time-tested addiction services and meetings. Thanks to a reputation for excellence, FRC has current inpatients from throughout Florida and many from out-of-state.

The program uses a continuum of care model including: (1) Inpatient treatment; (2) Partial Hospital treatment (accommodations may be arranged); (3) Intensive outpatient treatment; and (4) specialized programs for Impaired professionals; Boundary violators; Adolescents; and Pain management.

Child and Adolescent Inpatient Services

Shands at Vista has a general child and adolescent inpatient unit and partial hospitalization program for children ages 4 through 17 years old. Children and adolescents are evaluated and treated for a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including substance abuse. The program provides behavioral therapies, group therapy, family therapy, individual therapies, and pharmacotherapy as appropriate to individual treatment plans. Dr. Kimberly White, a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, is the Director of this unit. In addition to our inpatient program, there are intensive outpatient programs for adolescents with substance abuse disorders and dual psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. This program is co-managed by faculty in child & adolescent psychiatry and addiction medicine divisions.

Adult Inpatient Services

The adult inpatient unit at Shands at Vista provides a wide range of psychiatric services for individuals with acute and serious psychiatric conditions that require hospitalization. Dr. Teresa Pigott is Director of the unit. Areas of specialization include anxiety disorders (including obsessive-compulsive disorder), eating disorders, stabilization services, and participation in clinical trials.
