Assistant Professor
Dr. Davies was born in Bethpage, New York June 30th, 1957. His academic achievements include a B.S. degree in Interdisciplinary Basic Medical Sciences in 1979 as part of his participation in the Junior Honors Medical Program at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He obtained his M.D. degree from the University of Florida in 1982 and went on to complete a residency in anesthesiology in 1985 followed by a year's fellowship in cardiovascular anesthesiology, both at UF. He became board certified in anesthesiology at this time. He served as a postdoctoral associate in addiction medicine under the aegis of Dr. Mark Gold in UF's department of psychiatry in 2000/2001.
In his professional career he served as an instructor in anesthesiology at UF from 1985 and 1986. He was awarded an assistant professorship in the department of anesthesiology from 1986 to 1988. In 1988 he relocated to Ocala, Florida, where he founded the anesthesiology division of the nascent Ocala Heart Institute and practiced for the next ten years. Following his fellowship in addiction medicine he accepted an assistant professorship in the UF Department of Psychiatry's Division of Addiction Medicine in 2001, and assumed the role of assistant medical director at the Stewart-Marchman Center for Chemical Independence. He was certified as a Medical Review Officer both by the MROCC and by ASAM; and attained certification in addiction medicine by the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 2002.
Clinical Interests
Currently Dr. Davies devotes the majority of his time to caring for patients at Stewart-Marchman's multiple facilities, which provide chemical dependence treatment services primarily for the residents of Volusia and Flagler counties. He spends one day each week in the UF medical plaza in Gainesville attending to patients with pain management needs, eating disorders and addiction issues. Dr. Davies is the 2003 recipient of the Stewart-Marchman Center President’s award for contributions to patient care.
Research and Scholarly Interests
Dr. Davies has lectured on various topics, including the neurophysiology of addiction, substance use issues and the elderly, and addiction in health care professionals. Other interests include motivational interviewing, tobacco cessation and staff education. Dr. Davies has been a co-investigator in several clinical trials looking at novel agents for the treatment of anxiety disorders.
Educational Interests and Accomplishments
Dr. Davies regularly addresses the staff and clients of the Stewart-Marchman Center on such topics as addiction as a brain disease, neuropharmacology of addiction, and the signs and symptoms of mental illness. He was invited to participate in a workshop involving tobacco cessation training at the 2002 annual NAADAC meeting.
Leadership& and Service
Dr. Davies has orchestrated a preceptorship for family practice residents with the goal of raising their consciousness about the disease of addiction, and ultimately improving the care of their patients. He represents the medical staff on the quality improvement team and has served as a consultant in the county drug court program.
