Sylvia P. Montesinos

Sylvia P. Montesinos, M.D.

Assistant Professor

Dr. Sylvia Montesinos

Dr. Montesinos obtained her undergraduate degree in psychology at Jacksonville University. She then entered the University of Florida where she completed both medical school and residency. Throughout her training she developed an interest in community psychiatry and as a resident she was awarded the Alumni Association Outstanding Resident Award for her work with the homeless. As faculty she has remained involved in the community by continuing to participate in the resident-run free clinic for the homeless. Currently, however, she focuses most of her attention on her work at the infirmary as Assistant Professor where she works with a team of mental health providers delivering care for the student population.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Montesinos made community psychiatry a focus during her residency by working with the homeless at shelters both in Gainesville and Jacksonville. She continues to work with the community via her work on campus at Student Mental Health as well as through her participation in a resident-run free clinic for the homeless.

Educational Interests and Accomplishments

Currently Dr. Montesinos is one of the co-group leaders for "The Essentials of Patient Care", a first year medical student course designed to teach basic clinical and interviewing skills. She also meets with third year medical students on an individual basis to work on basic clinical skills.

Leadership And Service

Dr. Montesinos continues her involvement at a local homeless shelter where she volunteers her time.
