Matthew L. Nguyen, M.D. Assistant Professor
Dr. Nguyen completed his internship at Baylor College of Medicine and adult psychiatry residency at Georgetown University. He came to the University of Florida as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow in 1999 and subsequently joined the Faculty in 2001. He has served as the Medical Director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit, the Clinic Director for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Services, and head of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Consult Service. He currently is the Director of the Outpatient Clinic at Shands Vista. Dr. Nguyen's interests focus on Anxiety Spectrum Disorders in children, with knowledge in both pediatric psychopharmacology and various therapy modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dynamic Therapy. Clinical InterestsDr. Nguyen's main clinical interests focus on psychotherapy training for adult psychiatry residents and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellows. He supervises the trainees in behavioral modification, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic psychotherapy: "A non-biological approach to Psychiatry in today's atmosphere of newer medications and managed care is becoming more a lost art form, and it is important for our trainees to be able to conceptualize patients in a more global fashion." His other main focus is running the adolescent psychiatry inpatient team, with a focus on disruptive behavior disorders and substance abuse comorbidity. Research Interests and Scholarly InterestsDr. Nguyen has worked on Case Reports and Letters to the Editor and has also participated in clinical trials at the University of Florida, mainly with the child and adolescent population. He is also involved in the research protocols on the child inpatient unit, looking at family/parent attitudes towards psychiatric follow-up and its potential effects on recidivism. Educational Interests and AccomplishmentsDr. Nguyen believes in the importance of resident training and has been very involved with our adult residents and child fellows. He has helped to organize and facilitate the didactic schedule/seminars for the PGY-2 class, and has run the child case conferences. He has also extended many of these seminars to the pediatric residency, and has given Child Psychiatry lectures to both medical students and physician assistant students. He currently supervises each of the 1st year Child Fellows and several of the PGY-4 adult residents in weekly individual supervision. He has co-lead the Child Psychiatry case conferences for the Fellows and psychology interns and leads a monthly Child Psychiatry Board Review Seminar. Leadership And ServiceDr. Nguyen has said that he sees his role as serving to oversee the clinical care of patients, provide guidance and training for our trainees, manage and supervise the day-to-day operations, all the while being cognizant of financial responsibilities and availability of resources. His goals for the inpatient unit include expansion of clinical services, including that of our Day Treatment Program. We are also working to expand outpatient clinical services, to improve scheduling turnaround and enhance the training experiences for our Fellows. Part of this role is to set an example for our trainees, as many of them have limited exposure to administrative psychiatry during their training experience. Many of them learn good clinical and nonclinical skills by modeling them from their supervisors and mentors.
