Jerzy W. Szlabowicz, M.D. Assistant Professor
Originally from Poland, Dr. Szlabowicz is a graduate from the Medical Academy of Gdansk were he specialized in psychiatry, did clinical research and obtained Ph.D. degree. From 1978 to 1982, he worked in Africa. As the first psychiatrist ever to come to Gongola State, he established psychiatric services there and served as a consultant to Gongola State Government of Nigeria. After settling in the United States, he completed residency in psychiatry at the University of Florida in 1989. He has been on the Department of Psychiatry faculty since 1990. Dr. Szlabowicz is board-certified in both General Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry. Clinical InterestsDr. Szlabowicz's clinical interests continue to be focused on clinical care of mentally ill veterans, particularly elderly, in the Mental Health Clinic at the Gainesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. This is on a daily basis. As a board certified geriatric psychiatrist, he is leading a Geriatric Psychiatry Outpatient Team as well as a Memory Disorder Evaluation and Dementia Care Team in the Mental Health Clinic. Research Interests and Scholarly InterestsDr. Szlabowicz's research interests are in the areas of Affective Disorders, Dementias, and Psychopharmacology. His scholarly interests are mainly in geriatric psychiatry, particularly dementia and delirium; mood disorders and psychopharmacology. Educational Interests and AccomplishmentsDr. Szlabowicz supervises and teaches psychiatry residents in Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic at Shands and performs on-call duties at Shands and the VA Medical Center. He was involved in the teaching of geriatric psychiatry fellows and hopes to do so again it if Geriatric Program is reinstated. Leadership And ServiceDr. Szlabowicz was awarded a citation for "having rendered outstanding achievement to the State and national organization " from the Disabled American Veterans Department of Florida in the year 2000.
