Another important recent development in the clinical and educational life of the Department of Psychiatry is the acquisition of a freestanding community psychiatry hospital by Shands HealthCare, the not-for-profit private partner of the University of Florida College of Medicine. Shands at Vista is a modern and attractive facility located on an 18-acre landscaped campus in northwest Gainesville just a short drive from the UF Health Science Center.

Vista has an 80-bed inpatient capacity consisting of four units: one each for addictions medicine, high acuity adult psychiatric patients, lower acuity general adult psychiatric patients, children and adolescents. All four units are staffed by University of Florida psychiatric faculty.
