The Florida Recovery Center

The Florida Recovery Center (FRC) at the University of Florida offers evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults with substance use problems. Under the leadership of Kenneth Thompson, M.D. and Scott Teitelbaum, M.D. The FRC began offering treatment services to patients with acute problems requiring hospitalization and daily treatment of others in residential, a collegiate non-hospital setting. The program includes medical and psychiatric evaluation and management, detoxification, and relapse prevention. The FRC and the University of Florida College of Medicine's Division of Addiction Medicine provide academic support and ambiance to a program that is based on a goal of abstinence. The most sophisticated medical and neurological testing is available while at the same time we offer the most traditional time-tested addiction services and meetings. Thanks to a reputation for excellence, FRC has current inpatients from throughout Florida and many from out-of-state.

Impaired Professional Program

The University of Florida's Florida Recovery Center Impaired Professional Programs is designed to be a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary treatment program for impaired professionals suffering from a wide range of psychiatric, substance abuse, psychosexual, and personality disorders. The range and depth of professional expertise at the University of Florida College of Medicine allows us to provide effective treatment to professionals with addictions, dual diagnoses involving different combinations of psychiatric disorders.

Our philosophy is that through careful assessment, intensive treatment and consistent aftercare, many impaired professionals can return to their practice and continue providing their valuable service to the community. We realize that many of the problems these professionals face are complex and must be met with intensive and extended specialized treatment. Because each patient's response to treatment is different, length of stay in the program can vary.

The basic model is a 120-day intensive treatment program including both inpatient and residential treatment phases. Some health providers have continued their treatment and education after 120 days. Careful assessment will determine the treatment needs and level of structure and support needed by each patient. The goal of the program is to increase the patient's self-awareness and self-reliance while developing effective coping skills for dealing with stressors in their life.

Ken Thompson, M.D. the program's Director and Scott Teitelbaum, M.D. are involved in all phases of the program from initial assessment to daily treatment to return to work planning. Involvement in medical, nursing, legal and other College educational programs, re-training and re-certification is encouraged.
